Installation Instructions

This page really needs instructions on how to install these dictionaries, or a link to such a page.

Ans part 1. Use the dicoo wizard (see note below on errors). This will install them in the correct place for you. Alternatively, dictionaries should go in <OOo>/share/dict/ooo, where <OOo> is your Open Office program files, and you need to manually add using Tools > Options > Language Settings > Writing aids. --MaryEF 11:01, 8 July 2007 (CEST)

Question 2: Can anyone provide answer as to how to add the thesaurus - I have not had any success on this bit? --MaryEF 11:01, 8 July 2007 (CEST)

What is the point of these dictionaries?

Language is a propery of characters. Also, there's a global document language in the options dialog.

I've installed OOo 2.0.3 under Windows and then used File->Wizard->Install New Dictionaries

Installation went OK to the finish, but speclchecker can't see any language. Quite a bad experience as for people like me who like open source and free software.

Best regards, user Vak.

Dictionary source

Hi. I'm dying to know two things:

  1. What dictionaries are being used in OOo (e.g., aspell)?
  2. If I see a spelling error in the dictionary, how can I report it?

I'd add both these to this article if I knew. Thanks.Mwtoews 04:35, 26 November 2006 (CET)

I've added another link the the lingucomponent homepage that described the formats (MySpell/Hunspell)
Report errors to the creator of the dictionary, to be found in the README.

DDicOOo wizard errors

08 July 2007 Runtime error. There is an error in either the Polish or Swedish language sections of the DicOOo wizard macro. When prompted, remove these sections leaving the below and the rest will work fine. If you need Polish or Swedish, you will have to diagnose and fix the error (sorry I don't have time today - probably a missing " or an unexpected reaction to a special character in the languages).

Documentation for uploading to contrib?

Hi,

Is there a documented procedure for uploading to ftp.services.openoffice.org/pub/OpenOffice.org/contrib/dictionaries/ ?

Free Australian Dictionaries replaced with commercial dictionary ?

Why has this site replaced the free Australian Dictionary (to which I contributed) with a dictionary which one must pay for at http://www.justlocal.com.au/ ?

Surely this is against the spirit of Open source software ?

Missing Languages

I went onto my computer to compare the languages on Macs, Open Office and Office. I found that Open Office had more than either. Anyway, this is incomplete. Could some people please edit this and add the missing languages onto this wiki?

Some links do not work

For example, the link to the Russian directory is broken: http://ftp.services.openoffice.org/pub/OpenOffice.org/contrib/dictionaries/ru_RU.zip --Goodrone 07:18, 18 May 2012 (UTC)
