Standard Usability Scale

About SUS

The Usability Scale (SUS) is a standardized set of survey questions that allows us to benchmark our application against other offerings.

Highlights

  1. Administering SUS to users of an application can provide an easy and valid measure of perceived usability.
  2. SUS can be used on websites, software, hardware, cell-phones, interactive voice-response systems, ballots, yellow pages and more.
  3. The minimum sample size you need depends on whether you’re comparing SUS scores or using a single SUS to generate a benchmark. Even samples as small as 3 users can generate informative (albeit imprecise) results.
  4. The alternating positive and negative wording of the items of the standard SUS likely causes more harm than good. An all-positive version of SUS provides the same results but with fewer errors from users and researchers.
  5. Although 7-point scales generally have higher reliability than 5-point scales, it’s not worth increasing the number of SUS response options, because the small gain in reliability is offset by loss of the ability to easily compare your scores to published benchmarks.
  6. In addition to the standard use of SUS as a global measure of usability, the 10 SUS items can also provide subscales of usability and learnability.
