I want to make OpenOffice.org Writer my default word processor instead of Microsoft Word. How do I do that?

And how do I make OpenOffice.org Calc my default spreadsheet instead of Microsoft Excel?

I have just installed OpenOffice.org 3.0.1

I have been using OpenOffice for several years and have just updated to 3.1 and now I can not sum or add any figues on a spreadsheet the message that comes up is:-

Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library Runtime Error! Program: C:\Program Files\OpenOffice.org 3\program\soffice.bin

This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact application's support team for more information

I do not run Microsoft excel program only OpenOffice I have tried todownload the update for Dmaths and that still does not work is there a patch or something else I can do so that this function to sum amounts works again.
