Which version of Java do I need?

You can find information about the supported Java Runtime Environments in the Release Notes for each version of Apache OpenOffice:

  • Apache OpenOffice 3.4.1 Release Notes (supports Oracle Java 7)
  • Apache OpenOffice 4.0 Release Notes (supports Oracle Java 7)
  • Apache OpenOffice 4.1 Release Notes (supports Oracle Java 7)
  • Apache OpenOffice 4.1.1 Release Notes (supports Oracle Java 7)
  • Apache OpenOffice 4.1.2 Release Notes (supports Oracle Java 8? but the OpenOffice SDK won't build with Java 8)
  • Apache OpenOffice 4.1.3 Release Notes (supports Oracle Java 8, but the OpenOffice SDK won't build with Java 8)
  • Apache OpenOffice 4.1.4 Release Notes (supports Oracle Java 8, but the OpenOffice SDK won't build with Java 8)
  • Apache OpenOffice 4.1.5 Release Notes (supports Oracle Java 8, but the OpenOffice SDK won't build with Java 8)
  • Apache OpenOffice 4.1.6 Release Notes (supports Oracle Java 8, but the OpenOffice SDK won't build with Java 8)
  • Apache OpenOffice 4.1.7 Release Notes (supports Oracle Java 8 and AdoptOpenJDK 8, but the OpenOffice SDK won't build with Java 8)
  • Apache OpenOffice 4.1.8 Release Notes (supports Oracle Java 8 and AdoptOpenJDK 8, and the OpenOffice SDK can now be built with Java 8)
  • Apache OpenOffice 4.2.0 Release Notes (supports ...)

Please note that the JRE must match the bitness of the Apache OpenOffice installation (on Windows you must use an x86 JRE, on MacOS you must use an x64 JRE since Snow Leopard, on Linux it will depend on which Apache OpenOffice version was installed).
