How can I change the defaults for a new Writer document?

You need to create a template that has the settings you want and then make that template the default. To do this, follow these steps:

Part 1: Create a template

  1. Start with a blank document.
  2. Choose Format > Styles and Formatting to change whatever settings you need to change.
  3. Save the document as a template: File > Templates > Save
  4. Make sure My Templates is selected under Categories.
  5. Type a name for the template in the space provided.
  6. Click OK.

Part 2: Make your new template the default

  1. Choose File > Templates > Organize
  2. In the left-hand list, find your template. Double-click on the folder called My Templates, and the newly-created template will be inside that folder. Click on the template.
  3. Click Commands. From the drop-down menu that appears, select Set as Default Template.
