The last three posts that I've had are divisional CTO jobs in this company and I am pretty much bonded to it and its people nowUnfortunately it also has has some pretty dumb rules about what you are and are not allowed to say publicly without pre-approval from Head Office if you identify yourself as a company employee — and since I don't want to go down this road I have to leave it anonymous.

I am a maths graduate who has worked in the IT industry for over 30 years, starting in as a commercial programmer in my gap year before university, and then in mathematical and realtime programming after graduating. I worked for a leading UK systems house and consultancy after graduating initially in mathematical and real-time programming (via the signal processing connection). I then before worked up the development and services hierarchy to become chief engineer and technical manager of various business units. During this time my company was acquired by EDS and for 15 years I've worked within the EDS organisation that was itself acquired by HP last year. The last three posts that I held were divisional CTO jobs. I have been on long-term sickness since Jan 2008, so have had little active involvement with EDS or HP since this point, but I still remain pretty much bonded to it and its people.

I had an acute attack of M.E. in 1988 which I slowly recovered from over next couple of years. However I was left with a general susceptibility and had a number of post-viral fatigue type relapses (roughly every 2-3 years) which would typically last for a few weeks after a period of high work stress plus a viral infection. I then had a severe relapse in Dec '2007. With careful treatment my energy levels are typically at around 30 in the CFS ability scale, which basically means that my brain functions normally if I remain largely bed-bound. I can potter around but collapse after 10-15 mins.

In this state I am little use to my company and am incapable of holding down a CTO job, so I keep involved by contributing to various Open Source communities such as OpenOffice.org where I help to run the OOo User Community website, and the VirtualBox.org User Forum I am also an occasional contributor to Wikipedia. As a CFS sufferer, I came across Sarah Myhill's work and her website. I am currently working with her team to improve this service to the ME/CFS community by migrating her website to a Wiki format.
