Hack the Dialog - src style! Tutorial_Help

Now let's look for another dialog to hack and test out our theories on - hmm... there's the small zoom dialog that prompts for the zoom factor to be applied on the document - [find svx/ -name *zoom*]. But there is also the Character Map dialog that comes up on selecting Insert->Special Character.

OK, but how do we locate this dialog ? Since again we know that it is a shared dialog, we can do a find svx/ -name *char* but that returns a load of results this time. Another way is to look for a string on the dialog that we can grep for, in the source. So we look up the dialog and it is titled - "Special Characters".

Strings are resources, so they would be located in the src files, so what we do is - find svx/ -name *.src -exec grep -Hn "Special Characters" {} \; and we hit Bulls-eye: charmap.src. And as we have seen earlier, the dialog is usually distributed across, so we can expect to find charmap.hxx, charmap.cxx and charmap.hrc which is what we'll be hacking :-)

We'll do the same thing as last time - add a button, but this time we'll define the strings as well and fill out the picture a little more.

First we add in the declaration of the new button in the header:

So we define our own resource BTN_NOIDEA which will be what is displayed on the button this time. Correspondingly this resource will have an entry in the resource header file:

And in the resource source file, we add in the strings that are to be displayed for the button. And as you see in the patch below, the positions and the sizes of the buttons are also in the resource file. Since the button would otherwise not have space to be displayed, we'll also move the rest of the buttons in order to make space for our brand new button :-)

That's basically it. But wait, the button still does nothing when clicked! So we'll fix that. We'll set it up so that when clicked it pops up a small little message box acknowledging the person :-)

Voila! :-) Rebuild svx, and launch any of the applications, and select Insert-> Special Character and yippee! :-) We have our new little button and clicking it praises us back! :-)

The other boxes available are ErrorBox, WarningBox, QueryBox and there are more changes you can make throughout to poke and check how things are.
