To try to solve the problem of duplicate or unusual mnemonics in the product the StarOffice QA team has created a testtool script which is able to detect changes in the mnemonics menu entries which may erroneously occur during translation. The menu items (first level) should have - as far as possible - the same mnemonics for both consistency and usability reasons.

Do menu items (first level) refer :

  1. to menu entries in the menu bar (File, Edit, ...)
  2. to first level menu items in menus (New, Open, ...) ?

Does it means :

  1. the menu items should have the same mnemonics across OOo applications (Writer, Calc, ...)
  2. the menu items should have the same mnemonics across languages (~File, ~Fichier)

Is it possible to enhance this testtool script to detect duplicates and give them an other background colour in the mnemonics tables?

Yes, I fully agree, but this is not always possible as the first criteria, as I believe, should be that double mnemonics have to be avoided in the same menu in one component. Thereafter comes the criteria that the same function in different modules must have the same mnemonic. This causes sometimes a conflict as all the menu's in different components do not have the same fuctions.

> Sometimes it is impossible to give differents mnemonics to all functions as there are for example 24 functions in one menu: with an alphabet of only 26 letters and some letters which are very seldom used in Dutch, like q,x and y; it happens that one runs out of different letters and that duplicates can not be avoided, unless using Ctrl+ combinations (and even then one can run out of letters), which are standard assigned like Ctrl+C, Ctrl+V for copy and paste. Should the underscore not be ommitted? to avoid confusions and to open more possibilities for the remaining functions?

Best regards
