Project History
The project was unofficially founded on September 15, 2002 when the idea was born among Bogdan Kecman, Dušan Đorđević and Slobodan Marković to organize an OpenOffice.org 1.0.1 localization marathon event. The space for this fun and noble event was provided by a company named ICT-Tower, back in a time a Sun Microsystems Competence Center located in Belgrade. After initial call for action forwarded to several mailing lists, newsgroups and online forums, it was largely supported by many local free software enthusiasts.

Branko Tanović made the official proposal for the Serbian OpenOffice.org native language project on October 14, 2003. Supported by the Agenda d.o.o., the largest Slovenian solutions provider for open source software he continued to maintain OpenOffice.org 1.x localization created during the 2002 translation marathon event.
In Summer 2005, a Canadian-Serbian IT company and Novell partner from Belgrade, NEG d.o.o. (Independent Expert Group Ltd), decided to fund many improvements to the Serbian Novell SuSe Linux 10.0 localization, including translation of OpenOffice.org 2.0 release reusing previous community efforts on 1.x localization and developing a first free software spell-check support for Serbian. The project was completed successfully (srb.), heroically organized and handled by Danilo Šegan, involving other members of Serbian Gnome localization team prevod.org.
For a short time in 2006, the informal Internet community Naše pismo provided information on Serbian OpenOffice.org releases and hosted downloads on their web site. These efforts were succeed by the Linux User Group of Novi Sad (LUGoNS). In March 2007 LUGoNS made a died outreach to translate released OpenOffice.org guides and end-user documentation with the prospects of promoting OpenOffice.org for use in public and private enterprises in Novi Sad. The call for help was repeated in May 2008 during the First annual Serbian OpenOffice.org community meeting held in Novi Sad, and is still open at LUGoNS web site.

Note on sh language code usage inside OpenOffice.org
Language code sr is used to represent Serbian (Cyrillic) locale and language code sh is used to represent Serbian (Latin) locale. See more info on sh usage inside OpenOffice.org.
Once there is a full internal support for locale modifiers or Script Subtag from RFC 5646 we will migrate "sh" code to "sr@latin" or "sr-latin". While the patch from issue #111003 does allow Serbian (Latin) locale and default document language code selection using the locale modifier on Unix systems, it provides only a mapping to "sh" language code.
