OpenOffice.org announces version 2.2

Draft - not for publication

The OpenOffice.org Community announce the release of OpenOffice.org 2.2, the latest version of the leading open-source office suite. With upgrades to its word processor, spreadsheet, presentations, and database software, the free software package provides a real alternative to Microsoft's recently-released Office 2007 product - and an easier upgrade path for existing Microsoft Office users

Location and Timestamp -- The OpenOffice.org Community are proud to announce the release of OpenOffice.org 2.2, the latest version of the leading open-source office suite.

With the new version, users will notice more professional looking text across all parts of OpenOffice.org. OpenOffice.org has always had built-in support for 'kerning', a technique to improve the appearance of text written in proportional fonts. From 2.2, this will be switched on by default, so all users will benefit from more professional-looking text. OpenOffice.org's built-in pdf creator (unique to OpenOffice.org, and not available with Microsoft Office) is also enhanced with optional creation of bookmarks and user-definable export of form fields

Turning to the individual components, the Calc spreadsheet has further improvements to its support of Microsoft file formats (pivot table and trigonometric function support). Base - OpenOffice.org's database - gets improved SQL editing, and a new "Queries within Queries" feature. It also has improved compatibility options for some database drivers (e.g. Oracle ODBC). The handling of 'hidden' slides is made more intuitive in Impress, the presentations application.

OpenOffice.org is not just a software package - it's also a great toolkit for developers to use. OpenOffice.org Extensions - which allow third party developers to add features to OpenOffice.org simply - are now more closely integrated with OpenOffice.org, and there is also a mechanism where users can find and install updated version of extensions from with OpenOffice.org. OpenOffice.org 2.2 also provides more features to help the very important localisation (translation) teams.

Version 2.2 is the first release of OpenOffice.org in 2007, and reflects the Community's commitment to making new features available to users every few months. OpenOffice.org includes an on-line notifier, which checks regularly and informs users if a new version is available (users may choose to disable this option at any time).

OpenOffice.org 2.2 is now available for download. If the download servers are busy, there is an alternative legal peer-to-peer (P2P) system. Alternatively, OpenOffice.org Community Distributors supply the software on CD-ROM in many countries. OpenOffice.org's Native Language project can advise on the availability of translations.
