Used to other programs, many new users tend make use of numbered lists to number chapters, carrying many consistency problems to the document.

The method used by Writer to number chapters could seem not really evident, but it is so simply to use and so powerful that it is easy to get used to it.

Preliminaries: the Document Structure

A complex document can be made of parts, chapters, sections, subsections, appendixes... This structure is easy to obtain and administrate using paragraph styles:* Identifying the "Parts" with, for example, the Heading 1 paragraph style,

  • Chapter titles with Heading 2, * Sections with Heading 3,* ...* The text body with "Text Body" paragraph style,* Quotes with the "Quotes" paragraph style,* ...

This structure is useful not only for format consistency but also to set the document structure.
