When Apache OpenOffice changes "normal" quotes to “typographic” quotes, automatically changes the first character of the first word on the sentence to Capitals, replaces -> by and arrow → ... in all these situations an "automatic correction" or "AutoCorrect" is performed.

Template:Documentation/Note

Almost all Apache OpenOffice components have this "autocorrect" capability, which can be configured under Tools → AutoCorrect Options Template:Documentation/Tip.

The menu with the autocorrect options is similar on all components:

  • Replace tab: shows a list of text entries that will be automatically replaced. For example, (C) will be changed to ©, as well as some common errors ("abotu" will be changed for "about"). It is possible to create new autocorrect entries: it is only needed to write what needs to be replaced under Replace, the replacement on With and press  New .
  • Exceptions tab: A list of situations on which the user does not want some rules to be applied, like caps after a dot and correct two consecutive capitals.
  • Options tab: Elements on this menu depend on the Apache OpenOffice component used. In general, "Use replacement table" is to tell the program to use the list on the Replace tab. Writer has a perculiarity here: two check boxes for each item. The check box to the left means that the selected option will be applied when doing Format → AutoCorrect → Apply while the second check box means "apply the option while writting".

  • Localized Options tab: here it is possible to change how automatic substitution of quotes are handled, together with options that apply to particular languages like adding non breaking spaces before punctuation marks on French.
  • Word Completion tab: (only on Writer): Writer collects all long words that are written on the document and suggest them when their first characters are typed. It is recommended to consider the option "Show as tips". On Writer, all autocorrect options can be disabled at once by unchecking Format → AutoCorrect → While Typing.
