Java is not needed for all features of Apache OpenOffice to work correctly. However there will be some features which will not be available without it. For example, you will not be able to use the XSLT functionality, JDBC, applets, form generators, and Java Application Programming Interfaces (APIs) for 3rd party modules, if no Java is installed.
