In a spreadsheet, a referenced cell address is relative

by default. When you copy a referenced address from one cell to another, it changes automatically. You can convert a relative cell address

to an absolute cell address and vice versa.

To convert a cell address:
  1. Select the cell.
  2. Add or remove the US dollar sign ($) before the row number, the column name, or both. For example, A1 is a relative cell address, while $A$1 is an absolute cell address. If you want to change only the row number during pasting, use $A1.
