Accessing Spreadsheet Functions from Within a User Defined Function

I'm trying to access functions from within a OOBasic function I've written that are available inside the spreadsheet.

I was surprised to find that I can't access them simply by referencing them the way I would from the spreadsheet.

The other surprise is that performing that operation is avoided in any discussion. It should be the example right after the "VOL" example because its so obvious that you'd want to do exactly that.

Another surprise is that its seems hard to provide feedback, such as what I'm doing here, in a way that's likely to actually be seen by anyone. I'm not too hopeful that these question will be answered.

I wanted to do something simple and fast, and its an unbelievable chore getting such a simple thing to work.

Why isn't example #2 an example showing how to access spreadsheet functions?

And another thing: is there a user manual? I found something in Spanish, but not a language user manual.

Thanks
