Math is a tool for creating and editing mathematical formulae. It can be opened in a stand-alone instance for practice and creation of complicated formulas. However, the most common use is to insert a formula as an object in another OOo document.
To do this operation in Writer, go to Insert menu, select object, then formula.
Numbered equations can be entered by typing "fn" (without the quotes) then hitting the "F3" key.
