==Concrete Hacks==

Please add your ideas and topics you'd like to work on or mentor during the hackfest. Issues and/or features to be worked on should either be doable within two days, or at least could be given enough spin to be completed within a reasonable time and amount of effort after the hackfest. If available add links to the corresponding issue and possibly UX or other feature specifications.

Note that this is not an agenda and does not involve any schedule, we're "planning" more in an [http://www.unconference.net/ unConference] style, so about anything may go once the hackfest started. However, getting prepared for some tasks isn't bad either..
== Integration/porting ==

=== Maxima Integration ===

Integrate the Maxima symbolic computer algebra system into OOo, to solve calc problems in Writer.

The idea : create a Maxima session inside an OOo Writer document, in an embeded frame, or equivalent.

IMPORTANT :

* Weekly IRC meetings.
* Wiki use mandatory.
* Specifications and documentation MUST be written in parallel, in same time the code is written.
* Every diff of code will be documented on the wiki.
* the code must be written in C++ (prefered). A proof of concept using Python would be appreciated.
* Iterations

* Step 1
** Discover and learn UNO API
** be able to create a Writer document (and play with it)
** be able to launch an external application using UNO
** In parallel : learn how a Writer document is structured and how to use it programmaticaly (structure, foundations)

* Step 2
** Learn Maxima session requirements
** implement a way to launch a Maxima session from OOo
** implement a way to exchange datas with the open Maxima session
** propose a follow up for the devs who will continue the implementation

*Estimated Timeline
** 3 weeks of work = step 1
** 5 weeks of work = step 2

* Required skills/knowledge
=== Improve OOo usability on small-screen devices ===

With devices like netbooks, the OLPC or (gasp!) smartphones becoming powerful enough to run OOo (or the stripped-down OOo4Kids), it's becoming critically important to adapt the UI to smaller screen sizes and/or vastly different aspect ratios. This task is about improving OOo4Kids usability on the XO - from better Sugar integration to smaller UI footprint.

* Required skills/knowledge

=== Make OOo UI complexity configurable ===

The OOo4Kids project has pioneered a way of "dumbing down" the OOo UI, by selectively hiding functionality depending on user proficiency (controlled via three central user levels, beginner, intermediate & expert). This task is to expand on that, cover all five applications, and create a consistent, seamless level of complexity, adapted to the user skill level.

===Improve (Python) scriptability ===

OOo has a language-agnostic bridge, that permits a host of programming languages (Java, Python, C#, JScript etc etc) to access certain parts of the OOo core. That's nice, but many of the more interesting intestines of the code are not, not easily, or not elegantly usable like that.

This project is about '''extend''' OOo with Python :

* providing a SWIG, or boost::python-based wrapper around un-UNOized OOo core classes.
* provide organized code samples, and clear examples
===Improve the Impress slideshow annotation mode ===

OOo has recently gotten a live annotation mode in the slideshow component, via a sequence of semester projects at Ecole Centrale Nantes. This project is far from done, has been worked on by students previously, and is highly useful in a classroom/education setting.

Tasks :

* improve the eraser mode
* fix various bugs around
* improve the annotation mode
=== Improve Scanner integration inside OOo ===

Scanner support inside OOo is existing, but neglected functionality. In our increasingly visual oriented world, getting that up to par (across all platforms - though especially lacking on Mac) would make you many friends.

* analyze the current situation
* improve (the view, the way the scanner is used .. and so on)
* propose a proof of concept on Mac OS X (Baseline : Tiger)
===Component to check spreadsheet documents for potential errors===

Write an extension that checks a spreadsheet document for potential errors in formulas, presents a list of the findings to the user, and allows to correct them.

Things to look for could include
* Cells that contain numbers stored as text and are used in formulas,
* Number cells that are not used in any formulas,
* Empty cells that are used in single-cell formula references.
The list is not meant to be exhaustive.

Some statistical and financial analysis spreadsheet functions need improvement in numerical stability, for example for very large and/or small values, see [http://qa.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=18704 issue 18704] and dependencies.

=== Add new spreadsheet functions and parameters according to ODFF ===

The [http://www.oasis-open.org/committees/documents.php?wg_abbrev=office OpenDocument Format Formula specification] (ODFF aka OpenFormula) defines several new spreadsheet functions and new optional parameters to already existing functions that have to be implemented.
When an ODF spreadsheet is loaded and later saved ("save", "save as" or automatic saving for AutoRecovery), only the modified sheets are saved normally. For unmodified sheets, a part of the old XML stream is copied instead (see exceptions below). "Modified" means modified since loading, not the last saving.
* The file is loaded from a remote URL (http, ftp, etc).
If any of the following conditions is met, the affected sheets are saved normally (as if they were modified):
* A sheet contains shapes other than cell notes. This includes charts (but the chart content is separate anyway).
* "Recalculate Hard" (shift-ctrl-F9).
* If any shapes are manipulated in the document.
* If sheets are inserted or deleted.
(Note: This is a technical description, not a specification. To a normal user, all of this is meant to be transparent. Except for the needed time, a user should not notice a difference between normal and partial saving.)

This is similar to the experiment with [[Calc/Performance/Incremental Saving|Incremental Saving]], but based on sheets instead of cells.

If any sheets are copied this way, the names of automatic styles in these sheets have to be preserved, so they are not always named consecutively (ce1, ce2, ...) anymore.

If any of the following conditions is met, the whole file is saved normally:
* The file is loaded or saved with a different filter than "ODF Spreadsheet".
* The "content.xml" stream is not in UTF-8 encoding.
* The "content.xml" stream uses different namespace prefixes from those used by OOo.
* The loaded file is password protected.

If any of the following conditions is met, the affected sheets are saved normally (as if they were modified):
* A sheet contains shapes other than cell notes. This includes charts (but the chart content is separate anyway).
* A sheet contains validity definitions.

After any of the following actions, all sheets are considered modified:
* "Recalculate Hard" (shift-ctrl-F9).
* If any shapes are manipulated in the document.
* If sheets are inserted or deleted.

Sheets with formula results that depend on changes are also considered modified.
{{DISPLAYTITLE:Updating Row Heights}}

After loading a spreadsheet file, automatic row heights are updated. This can take a significant part of the total loading time. To save some of this time, we want to update the heights only for those sheets for which the height information is needed. The implementation in {{CWS|dr70|DEV300}} currently does the following:

* The stored row heights from the file are loaded even if they are automatic. Previously they were ignored because they would be recalculated anyway. Loading them doesn't add significant overhead.

* If a sheet doesn't have any shapes or notes, and isn't the visible sheet as defined in the view settings, the row heights for that sheet aren't updated after loading. Instead the sheet gets a "pending" flag for later updating. The updates for the visible sheet and the sheets with shapes together use the existing "Adapt row height" progress bar.

* When switching to a different sheet that needs updating, the heights are updated with a progress bar, before switching, so there is some feedback why this takes longer. Similar for printing or page preview. The text for the progress bar is the same "Adapt row height" as after loading.

When shapes are involved, updating the row heights can take much longer, so there we keep the old sequence of updating row heights before positioning the shapes. To remove this limitation at a later time, we can either try to accelerate row height updates with shapes, or keep the shape positions from the file in memory (cell and relative position), and apply them only after updating the row heights.

Currently open: If simple notes can be loaded without using shapes, they will no longer require immediate row height updates.

The API method getUniqueCellFormatRanges is used to collect ranges with equal cell formats, in order to generate automatic styles only once for each set of formats. The implementation uses ScAttrRectIterator to iterate over cell attributes, and ScRangeList::Join to update the list of ranges for each format. ScAttrRectIterator returns ranges column-wise. It that is taken into account, they can be joined more efficiently than with the general-case ScRangeList::Join method. In cases where a set of attributes is used in many non-adjacent cells or ranges, ScRangeList::Join can use a large part of the total saving time, so in these cases saving will be much faster.

== An experiment with incremental saving in Calc ==

For a while, there has been the idea to speed up the saving of small changes to large spreadsheet documents by generating only the XML elements for the changed cells.

I did a little experiment to find out how much time this can really save. It's not a complete implementation, just a test to see what's possible. This is what I changed:
* Loading of the file is unchanged. No additional information is kept in memory after the file is loaded.
* What I keep in memory is the list of changes, as long as only supported changes were made. For this test, only input of numbers into cells that weren't empty before is supported. If any other changes are made, the list is discarded and the normal save code is used. For simplicity, it is assumed that the input doesn't change the cell's format. Changed formula results are ignored (in a real implementation, they have to be tracked, too).
* When the file is saved, and the content.xml stream is generated, first the old content.xml is opened and parsed for the positions of the affected cell elements (see below for details). Then, the output is generated by copying the non-affected parts and inserting a new simple cell element instead of each affected cell.
* The styles.xml stream is copied in unchanged form.

To find the affected cell elements in the XML stream quickly, expat's C interface is used, searching for qualified element names table:table, table:table-row, table:table-cell and table:covered-table-cell. Because this is just an optimization, I can assume that our own namespace prefixes are used. Parsing is stopped when the last affected cell was found.

For testing, I used a large, simple file with 500000 cells, only text and numbers.

In CPU time (measured with callgrind), normal saving takes 20.1 billion cycles. Incremental saving with three values changed at the top of the file takes 6.3 billion, and with three values changed at the bottom it takes 11.4 billion cycles. Note that a real implementation would probably need some additional checks that might increase the time again.

In exchange for these saved CPU cycles, there is a bit of additional file access to read the old streams again. This isn't much, because they can be read from the compressed file. Reliably measuring the total time isn't easy, but quick tests with a larger file show the time for incremental saving to be around 50% of normal for changes at the top, and 70% for changes at the bottom. On other machines, this might be totally different.

== What next? ==

As mentioned above, the immediate goal of this was only to get the numbers of what is possible. Before making a real implementation of this, we should see where we can get by improving the normal saving, because that would benefit all usages, not only specific, limited modifications.

For reference, the code of this experiment is in the CWS "calcincsave".

=== Improve Equation Editor Math ===

'''DRAFT'''

==== Intro ====

Concerns: OpenOffice.org 3.x all versions

Objective: currently, the equations editor has some issues (including very old one) and they need to be fixed, because all those issues are a '''strong brake''' for OpenOffice.org acceptance in Education.

Main issues are:

- misalignment

- missing symbols ( |-> , <-| , angle A^B .. etc)

- other issues to be fixed in starmath

FIXME : add the list of concerned issues

==== Skills====

Skills with languages C/C++ (tokenization, debugging ) maths symbols and good math knowledge (for equations writing ) is a plus.

Good communication skills are expected too (because several modules are concerned )

====Tasks ====

Familiarize with the starmath editor code

Familiarize with links in writer (writer is concerned in some issues)

Expected:

For issue 972 ( see links [[Education_Project/Effort#Implement_Math_Baseline_Alignement_.28click_me.29| Education Project effort for starmath]] and [[Education_Project/Effort/Math_baseline_alignment| Math_baseline_alignment]] )

- code to Implement a new parameter for baseline computation without edit equations

- write specs for add a the info in the .odt format

- design a proof of concept

- implement it

Complete : other little math issues ( e.g. missing |-> and <-| symbols .. etc )
===Page preview for Writer===

Similar to OOo Impress' slide sorter pane, provide similar
functionality for Writer. Initially, it should be possible to see page
thumbnails there, and navigate the document with it.

* Reguired skills/knowledge: C++, familiarity with Writer and UNO a big plus

===Style optimizer for Writer===

Often, people format their text document in weird ways, using
whitespace for formatting, putting in section numbers literally
instead of using the numbering feature etc.
This proposal is about detecting such suboptimal content and
converting it into a properly formatted document (using styles
wherever possible).

* Reguired skills/knowledge: fluent in one of the languages OOo has an UNO bridge for, familiarity with Writer and Writer API a big plus

; Contact
: dev@sw.openoffice.org
: kendy at novell dot com, fstrba at novell dot com

===Word macro compatibility===

Recently Sun and Novell announced to pool resources to provide VBA
macro compatability see
[http://blogs.sun.com/GullFOSS/entry/sun_and_novell_work_together
here].

Currently work in the project is concentrated on providing Excel support by
* providing the framework for the compatibiltiy api via a plugable component
* modifying the basic engine to support more compatibility features
* porting the [[Helperapi]] code (for excel) to c++ (see. [[VBA]] & [[Porting_notes]])

Tasks

* extend the base framework by developing helper objects and implementations to be used by both the excel and writer compatibility object implementations
* port the existing (word) helper api objects from Java to C++

Required skills/knowledge: C++, Java. Knowledge of UNO, OOo's writer
API and some experience with VBA macros and Word VBA api a big plus

; Contact
: dev@sw.openoffice.org
: noel.power at novell dot com

===RTF Tokenizer===

The new OOXML import filter for Word documents (.dotx) will soon have a better import quality than the existing RTF import filter. The concept of this new filter allows to plug in doc and rtf tokenizers so that these formats can be handled by the same filter. A doc tokenizer is already in the works, an RTF tokenizer would be a very welcomed addition.

Tasks

* understand how the tokenizer is embedded into the filter
* tokenize RTF

Required skills/knowledge: C++. Knowledge about Word's document model and/or the RTF format would be advantageous.

; Contact
: dev@sw.openoffice.org
: Henning.Brinkmann at sun dot com

===Enhanced usability of working with page attributes and properties===

Currently changing page attributes or adding page properties like headers and footers is hard to understand. Users that don't know about hard page breaks, page styles and follow styles will have a hard time to format pages to their likings. A nice UI that hides the technical details and uses terms of the user space would help a lot.

===HTML export: export formulas as MathML===
==Calc/Chart==

===Templates for Charts===

Into OpenOffice.org integrate the possibility to create and use templates for charts, see [http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=33793 issue 33793].
It will help users to speed up their workflow and ease the creation of stylish charts.
There should be an easy way to create a template from an existing chart. When creating a chart the user should be able to choose between different templates.
Some useful default templates should be offered, for example line charts with different dashes or bar charts with different hatchings.

* Required skills/knowledge: C++, ability to understand and manipulate complex systems, general knowledge about charts
===Implement additional 3D slideshow transitions===

Building on top of a successful
[http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/Summer_of_Code_2007/proposals#Impress:_OpenGL_rendered_transitions] from last year, the goal is to add more 3D transitions
to the Impress application. A transition is an animation where one page
is visible in the beginning and another in the end. It is used during
presentation slideshow to switch pages.

In comparison to PowerPoint, OOo Impress does not have a standalone
inexperienced users. Furthermore, it offers a chance to pursue
different routes in terms of UI and functionality, that might not
===Use PDF import's layout recognition for other vector formats===
OOo's newly implemented PDF import employs some sophisticated layout
The dBase driver, the text/csv driver, and the Spreadsheet driver would all benefit from this extension.
===SDBC driver for LDAP directories===

OpenOffice.org already features accessing LDAP data, by shipping Mozilla components which enable access to LDAP servers. However, this solution has some disadvantages, the most prominent being that the broad variety of LDAP schemes (i.e. which LDAP classes and attributes are actually used to reflect the data being of interest) is not captured currently - we use a fixed mapping from LDAP to an OOo table, which seriously limits the use of this feature for some people/organizations. Also, including Mozilla binaries is a constant source of hassles for builds done for the various Linux distributions, to the grade that they effectively disabled the complete functionality.

To enable everybody to access the LDAP data of her choice in OOo, we would need to write a dedicated SDBC driver, which "flattens" an LDAP directory to a database table (i.e. provides the data of an LDAP directory as set of rows), but would be fully customizable. This means the user can herself decide which LDAP attribute should be mapped to which "table column" in the "databases table" provided by the SDBC driver.

===Dialogs with Form Functionality===

When creating a form, the user always needs to bother with a Writer document. Very often, this is much too oversized. It would be sufficient to have a simple dialog which contains all the data access controls.

The project is to (in different steps)
- extend the dialog runtime engine to (optionally) include data-aware form controls
- create a form designer for dialog-based forms (similar to the existing Basic Dialog IDE)
- implement persistence of dialog-based forms
- embed dialog-based forms into database documents (.odb)

Depending on more fine-grained planning, it might become apparent that not all of this can be done in the scope of a Google Summer of Code project, and reasonable milestones need to be defined.

===Enhanced SVG export filter===

OOo has very limited SVG export functionality. This proposal is about
improving the SVG export substantially, e.g. creating SVG that
contains multiple slides and can be navigated trough with mouse or key
===Crosscompile Win32 OOo on Linux using MSVC in Wine===

Compiling OOo for Windows is a major pain and comparatively slow, but often
required for the OOo hacker to have her CWS approved. Using the free
Microsoft compiler editions combined with fully FLOSS tooling would
permit virtually everybody to provide OOo Windows builds. This
proposal is about researching this issue, provide the necessary
changes to the build system (and maybe Wine) to make that
possible. There's been a proof of concept that "wine cl.exe" actually
that can be found with improved profiling. The exciting part of this
task is clearly, finding and understanding sillies in the code -
mis-uses of otherwise sensible APIs, problematic code structures and
so on; and then with the minimum of code tweaking them to make them
fly. As part of this, a small improvement to KCachegrind's visualisation
will also be required (basic C++). We will also look at reducing memory
use as an extensions. Not really a single task, but a collection of
incremental wins over some weeks.

If you have a task that is challenging enough, and there is an OpenOffice.org Project Member willing to mentor the task, feel free to coordinate with the appropriate project lead. If the appropriate project has been found and it supports the task, add it below and make sure the mentor applies with the web app.

Each entry should contain the task description, required skills, project mailing list for discussion and personal contact. Links to the [[To-Dos]] are appreciated provided that the task is well described there ;-)

===Example entry===

This is just an example - the real entry must not start with a space at the beginning
of the line.
A full description of the task should be here; one that will help to see that this task
is important, and interesting to hack on. Alternatively it could be an exact link to
the description that is already in [[To-Dos]].

Nn: menu, hidden items, API not for 2.4

== Description ==
When a cell within the data field is double-clicked, it inserts a new sheet containing a subset of rows from the original data source that constitutes the result data displayed in that cell. For instance, when the data field function is selected to be SUM, then the number that is shown in the data field cell must be identical to the sum of all the data field values in the constituent rows displayed in the inserted sheet.

The area that can provide a drill-down sheet spans from the top-left cell in the data field to the bottom-right corner of the data pilot output, including the '''Total Result''' row and column.

The same function is available using "Data / Group and Outline / Show Details" from the menu, with the cell cursor on the result cell.

Hidden items ("Hide items" or "Show automatically" in the field options dialog) are not evaluated, the rows for the hidden items are included.

The feature is available for DataPilot tables from cell ranges or database data, but not yet for external service implementations (see API Change below).

== API Change (not for 2.4) ==

This functionality introduces the following new API.

<code>[cpp,N]
module com { module sun { module star { module sheet {

interface XDataPilotTable2: com::sun::star::sheet::XDataPilotTable
{
sequence< sequence< any > > getDrillDownData( [in] com::sun::star::table::CellAddress aAddr );
};

}; }; }; };
</code>

<code>[cpp,N]
module com { module sun { module star { module sheet {

interface XDrillDownDataSupplier: com::sun::star::uno::XInterface
{
sequence< sequence< any > > getDrillDownData(
[in] sequence< com::sun::star::sheet::DataPilotFieldFilter > aFilters );
};

}; }; }; };
</code>

<code>[cpp,N]
module com { module sun { module star { module sheet {

struct DataPilotFieldFilter
{
/** Field name. */
string FieldName;

/** String value that needs to match against. */
string MatchValue;
};

}; }; }; };
</code>

The ''com.sun.star.sheet.DataPilotSource'' service will support the ''XDrillDownDataSupplier'' interface to provide a 2-dimensional array data consisting of a subset of the original data source table that satisfies a given set of filtering criteria. A sequence of ''DataPilotFieldFilter'' provides desired filtering criteria to ''getDrillDownData()'' method. This interface is intended for an external UNO package so that it can overwrite the interface to provide constituent rows when requested.

The interface ''com.sun.star.sheet.XDataPilotTable2'' extends the existing ''com.sun.star.sheet.XDataPilotTable'' interface to provide additional method ''getDrillDownData()'' so that the client code can obtain constituent rows from the data pilot table. The existing ''com.sun.star.sheet.DataPilotTable'' service will support this new interface.
==Application, Draw/Impress==
* The mechanism of slide show and animation (what is the difference between before and after)?
** The slideshow itself, and all animation functionality are implemented in the [[Slideshow]] module. (What is the meeaing of "before" and "after" in the context of this question?)
* Copy&Paste: Memory structure of clipboard in SD, difference between coping objects inside slides and coping objects from or into other applications like SW, SC?
** Clipboard between the same application type is done by using core implementations. Clipboard between different application types is done by using xml.
* Mechanism of designing and implementation of master page and layout style in presentation (CL)
** Master pages and layout styles are already implemented in OOo.

* Flash Export: (CL)
** Difference between the export of the simple character and the complex character?
*** Simple characters are exported using the font tags of the flash format, complex characters are exported as polygons.
** The implementation of the Polygon in VCL. Such as the EM square，Body，Ascent and Descent to realize of the glyph?
*** This question needs more data as the implementation of the Polygon in VCl itself has nothing to do with glyphs. It is only used to represend glyphs.
** The custom animation will be lost after the slides being exported into the swf. What cause it? There is no support to export the animation, is there? Do you have any plan to consummate it? And what's your purpose in this area?
*** It is caused by the absence of an implementation that exports this particular feature. There is currently no assigned developer for the task to add this feature to the flash export. One developer from Redflag is activly contributing to the flash export.

==Application, Calc==
* How are the areas for charts recognized, and how does the update notification work? (NN)
** Note that much of this has changed for the new chart. Don't make any changes based on older versions (before SRC680m213).
** The chart implementation uses the UNO API (XDataProvider) to get data sequence objects for each data series, and registers itself as modify listener with these objects.
** For the time when a chart object hasn't been loaded yet, Calc has its own internal listener (ScChartListener) to load the chart if its data is changed.
* Relationship between cells, sheets and workbooks (class diagram) (NN)
** The core implementation of the document is class ScDocument. It has an array of pointers to ScTable (implementation of a sheet). Each sheet has a fixed-size array of ScColumn objects. Each ScColumn object holds the cells in one column.
** The cells are implemented by base class ScBaseCell and derived classes:
*** ScNoteCell (empty except for note and listeners)
*** ScValueCell (constant numeric value)
*** ScStringCell (simple text)
*** ScEditCell (formatted or multi-paragraph text)
*** ScFormulaCell (formula)
* Copy&Paste: What's happening on Copy directly, and later if someone pastes into same spreadsheet or other application (NN)
** Implementation of copy for cells is at ScViewFunc::CopyToClip. The cells are copied into an internal object (ScDocument), then a ScTransferObj is created as the interface to the clipboard.
** Pasting into Calc copies the cells directly from the internal ScDocument object. Clipboard data in other formats for external applications is created on demand by ScTransferObj (ScTransferObj::GetData).

==Application, Database==
* Why was the dbase driver engineered into file_based driver? And compared with the text/csv driver, what are the advantages of it in OOo's database, and how it was being designed in OOo's database?
** The "file" driver is not an own driver, it's a framework for, well, file-based databases, where a single file represents a table, and all such files in a given directory comprise the database. Both the text/csv driver and the dBase driver use this framework.
** The advantage of the dBase driver over the text/csv driver is that the former can read dBase files, while the latter can't.
** What do you mean with "was being designed"?
* What are the project's short-term plan or the direction of development now?
** There are two areas which we currently mainly focus on: The new report designer which will be part of OpenOffice.org 2.3, and improved programmability of Base, where the first step is to allow embedding macros in database document.
* In the project named "Native, cross-platform access to MS Access databases", what is the current solution? Is there anyone beginning to re-engineer the MDB format himself?
** The current solution is employing [http://mdbtools.sourceforge.net/ MDB-Tools], a third-party product which allows access to .mdb files. The driver based on MDB-Tools is in [http://eis.services.openoffice.org/EIS2/cws.ShowCWS?logon=true&Id=2959&Path=SRC680%2Fmdbdriver02 alpha state], and still has serious shortcomings. The project itself is currently stalled, nobody is actively working on it. Also, nobody is working on doing a reverse-engineering of the MSA file format. If somebody wants to do this, we should seriously investigate whether it makes more sense to support and improve existing reverse engineering efforts, namely MDB-Tools.
* Which are the common threads started at start up time and used by all OOo applications at runtime, and what are their functions? ([[KR]])?
: A first over regarding the threads can be found here: [[Effort/Implement_Basic_Threading-Architecture#Threads]] More to come ...
* Structure of VCL? See [[Sort_of_documentation_about_VCL_around_Native_Mac_OS_X_port]]
** A general overview about VCL was created by Eric Bachard, please have a look [http://wiki.services.openoffice.org/wiki/User:Ericb#Sort_of_documentation_about_VCL_around_Native_Mac_OS_X_port here]
* How to improve stability, and where to start? Beside doing thorough QA, you might use tools like [http://tools.www.openoffice.org/debugging/usingvalgrind.sxw Valgrind] or [http://tools.openoffice.org/files/documents/15/872/BoundsChecker.html BoundsChecker]
* How to improve performance, and where to start? Use a [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Performance_analysis profiler] to analyze the runtime behavior of the code that you want to improve.
* Which code of OOo is responsible for the VBA Macro parse? How are they implemented?
** This is done by a hard coded parser in basic/source/comp
* How is the code implemented to fulfill the specification of Unicode and gb2312 (SB): Follow the source code links for &ldquo;UTF7&ldquo; and &ldquo;UTF8&ldquo; (Unicode) and &ldquo;EUC_CN&rdquo; (GB2312) in [http://porting.openoffice.org/source/browse/porting/sal/textenc/textenc.cxx?rev=1.6&view=markup sal/textenc/textenc.cxx:1.6].
* Mozilla and ActiveX plugins (MAV)
* Which internet protocols are supported in OOo, and what can be improved to the network ability of OOo? (KSO)

==Feature Questions==
* Currently a document can only be processed by one of the OOo applications - what about having just one application processing all kind of documents?
* Are there any plans to integrate a desktop search engine? (Could be done as an extension)
* Any plans to introduce classes comparable to CObject and CWinApp in MFC? (???)
===Draw/Impress: SVG Import Filter===

[http://www.w3.org/Graphics/SVG/ SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics)] is a vector graphics format that describes 2D graphics in XML.

There's no native SVG import filter for OOo. There exists an [http://www.ipd.uka.de/~hauma/svg-import/ external one], but unfortunately it has very strong dependencies - [http://java.sun.com/javase/downloads/index.jsp Java 5.0], and [http://xmlgraphics.apache.org/batik/ Batik]. The goal of this task is to create a new implementation that does not require any too big libraries.

A proof of concept implementation written in C++ using the UNO Draw API, and a lighweight [http://cairographics.org/libsvg libsvg library] exists (see [http://svn.gnome.org/viewcvs/ooo-build/trunk/patches/src680/svg-import.diff here]), but it needs a lot of work to be really usable. Also libsvg does not seem to be too actively maintained, so maybe it would be desirable to use something other library than libsvg; but similarly to it, the solution should be lighweight.

More information is available in [http://artax.karlin.mff.cuni.cz/~kendy/blog/archives/monthly/2006-10.html#2006-10-02T17_14_44.htm Kendy's blog].
===Calc: Integration of R into Calc===

Create an add-on component that allows a Calc user to let the [http://www.r-project.org/ R environment] do calculations on data from Calc cells and put the results into the spreadsheet again.

This should include a dialog to select input parameters and options, and allow results to be values or graph images. Note that the incompatible licenses (R is under GPL) have to be taken care of, possibly by starting R as a separate process.

Some more thoughts on the subject have been collected at [[Statistical Data Analysis Tool#Third Party Library Integration]].

===Calc: Watch Window===

A Watch Window is a separate, small window that remains "on top" and enables users to monitor a selected set of cells, see [http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=28386 issue 28386].

This could be implemented as an add-on component with a modeless dialog containing the list of watched cells as well as the UI to add or remove cells.

* Required skills/knowledge: Java or C++
===Writer: RTF Generator===

The current RTF export of OpenOffice.org is not as good as the export to the Word (.doc) format. Parsing the generated Word format stream with a Word tokenizer and handing over the generated events to an RTF generator would lead to an RTF export filter with the same quality as the binary Word export filter. Remark: the tokenizer itself isn't complete today but in its current state covers enough parts of the Word format to make this a valuable project for the planned time span.

* Required skills/knowledge: C++, some knowledge about the Word file format would be a plus

If you know something about the format of Lotus WordPro - here's the perfect task for you! Anything can be useful as a start, even a simple filter that just excerpts the pure text. A first patch is available but it doesn't work good enough until now.
